Original shift rod bushings are usually worn out and sloppy. If you remove the shifter and grab the shift rod, see if the rod moves up and down or side to side. That means the shift rod bushing is worn. The rod is only supposed to move forward and back. A shift rod bushing for VW Volkswagen is plastic. It is on the shift rod below the shifter. It is held in place with a c clip. Once the bushing is worn out, the hanger holding the bushing starts to wear out also. This is one of those jobs where the part is cheap but to install it takes an hour. You must remove the shift rod coupler and slide to towards the front of the car. The shift rod tappers smaller towards the coupler side. You install it on the skinny part of the rod and slide it back to the rear of the car. You can also grease the rod.
