Setting the correct end play on a VW Volkswagen crankshaft and flywheel can mean life or death of a air cooled motor. Too tight will lock the motor up and seize the rear main bearing. Too loose will pound the case with excessive movement. I never use used shims when setting end play. Used shims will vary in thickness from the inside to the outside, giving an inaccurate measurement. I always use new shims. Its faster and you know it is right on money. I keep 2 to 3 of each size shim on hand when setting end play. I write the thickness on each shim with a marker, so I don't have to keep measuring them if I set them down (they all look the same). You are supposed to use 3 shims to reduce the end play to .003 to .005 of an inch. I like to be on the .004 or .005 side., leaving no room for a lock up. Shims are sold individually.
