Original Bosch and NGK replacement spark plugs for VW Volkswagnes are offered in several heat ranges, lengths and diameters. 98% of all Bugs, Karmann Ghias, early Buses, Type 3�s and Things use Bosch W8AC 14mm 1/2 inch reach spark plugs. Heavy cars (Buses) or hot running performance motors can make head temperatures soar. Most people run a cooler plug to keep the head temperature down. Although a colder plug is more susceptible to fouling, I run it with an electronic ignition and a 40,000 volt coil. This combination gives me maximum spark and burns all the gas, which leaves the plugs clean and still keeps my heads cool. Some replacement and performance heads are designed to use 3/4 inch long reach plugs. Heads using 3/4 inch long reach plugs have less likelihood of cracking and there is greater heat dissipation properties from the spark plug to the head. 3/4 inch long reach plugs are available in 14mm and 12mm. That�s why big valve heads with 12mm 3/4 deep reach plugs have always been the hot ticket. They are the best of both worlds, big valves for more head flow and small diameter deep reach plugs to keep the heads from cracking.
