Replacement door handles for VW Volkswagen. Unless you find a used or NOS German door handle, chrome replacement door handles are the only alternative. 1956-1959 door handles are only available with a key and will replace a nonlocking passengers handle too. 1960-1964 handles with keys will work on both the drivers and passenger door but are for cars that were originally locking on the driver’s side only. When keyed in the locking position, 60-64 handles lock the button in the up position so it can’t be pressed down to unlock the door. Both 1960-1964 and 1965-1966 door handles look the same on the outside but are designed internally different and operate different functions inside the door. So make sure you check your doors. 1965-1966 handles have a flipper paddle internally to raise and lower the door latch mechanism. No matter what position the key is in on the handle, the button can be depressed in. Turning the key allows the internal flipper paddle to raise and lower the door latch into the locking and unlocking position. 1968-1979 handles fit both Beetle and Karmann Ghia. If being used on Ghia, you must reuse the internal lock paddle from the original handles. They just unscrew. Reusing your old lock cylinder in late model handles is very easy. It is imperative that you never take apart a lock cylinder in a door handle without the key being in the handle. If the key is not in the lock cylinder while being removed, the tumblers are spring loaded and will fly apart. To reuse you old lock cylinder take less than 10 minute to take apart and reassemble.
