Description

This is a replacement front inner wheel bearing for VW Volkswagen Bug, Super Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Bus or Type 3. Tapered roller wheel bearings are a direct replacement for the old early ball bearing style wheel bearings. New wheel bearings always come with a new inner race. You should never try to use the old race over. When tightening tapered wheel bearings, there is a "thrust washer" just before the final clamp or lock nut. This thrust washer must have .002 clearance between the nut and the washer. I will usually tighten the nut down and make sure the thrust washer moves. You can take a screwdriver and pry the washer side to side or up and down to check for movement. I try to get the nut tight as possible as long as the washer still moves. If you tighten down the nut too tight and the thrust washer has no clearance, so when the wheel bearings get hot and expand, they can lock up and burn on to the spindle causing it to breaking off. If you are questioning whether your front ball joint spindles are early or late, there is an easy way to check. 1966 through mid-1968 VW Volkswagen Beetle original early spindles take early style tie rod ends with 17mm nuts. Most replacement ball joint disc brake and ball joint dropped spindles are made for late model tie rod ends with 19mm nuts. Late model spindles mid-1968 through 1977 are made with a larger diameter stub and use wheel bearings and grease seals with a larger inside diameter.
