Front engine firewall tins for VW Volkswagen are made for early oil coolers and late doghouse oil coolers. Late model doghouse oil coolers have a 2 piece exhaust vent to remove hot air from oil cooler out of the engine compartment. A vent hole is cut into the firewall tin to accommodate one of the exhaust vents. Air cooled VW motors use sheet metal and rubber seals to separate hot and cold air. Your fan is trying to pull in cold air over the motor from any source. Normally through deck lid louvers and vent holes below the rear window. If there are no engine compartment seals, breast plate or tins below the firewall, then the fan will try draw hot air from gaps in the missing tin and seals. Then you start to recycle hot air over your motor instead of cool air. This is a recipe of disaster. An airtight engine compartment is a must. The cars that have the correct seals and tin live the longest. Front firewall tins are available in black painted or chromed.
