Original OEM Continental fan belts for VW Volkswagen Bug, Super beetle, Bus, Karmann Ghia and Type 3. If you break a fan belt in a Bug, you won't get very far. The belt not only operates the generator or alternator, it also turns the cooling fan. It is cheap insurance to carry a spare belt. Although they are still in working condition, close inspection will reveal small hairline cracks in an old belt. The heat makes a fan belt brittle and you can break an old one just by bending it with your hands. Belt tension is adjusted with pulley shims. 7 to 10 shims are required. You can't make it too tight or too loose. Too tight will burn the generator bearing and too loose will slip. I make sure it can twist 90 degrees. Changing your fan belt and gas hose every year is good preventative maintenance.
