Adjusting the clutch cable on a VW Volkswagen requires you to crawl under the car and turn the wing nut. It is located on the transmission cross shaft lever. When I adjust my clutch cable, I will clamp visegrips to the cable so it won't spin when I am turning the wing nut. They say you want 1 inch of pedal play but I try to grab the cross shaft lever an tighten it until I feel the throw out bearing make contact and then back the nut off. Then I check the pedal play. If you tighten the wing nut too tight, the throw out bearing will never release from the pressure plate while the motor is running. This is a recipe for disaster. No play in the clutch cable adjustment will blow up the throw out bearing pressure plate. If you use a Kennedy pressure plate, it is a good idea to just replace the nut. The threads get pounded with heavy duty pressure plates. I always carry a new wing nut on my spare clutch cable.
