This is the brass timing gear that is pressed on to the crankshaft. This brass gear is very easy to damage when installing a distributor drive pinion gear or even worse rotating the motor with the pinion gear installed and no distributor. That is a sure way to shred the teeth of the gear. This gear is easy to install on a crankshaft once it is heated on a hot plate or iron. This gear can be installed on either side. There is no timing mark like the camshaft timing gear.
